Garibaldi Lake is held in place by a wall of lava. Roughly 9,000 years ago, a Coast Mountain volcano spilled dacite against the retreating flank of a Pleistocene glacier. The ice acted as a mould.
When it melted away, it left the Barrier — a cliff some 300 metres high, now the only thing standing between the lake and the Cheakamus Valley below. That geological accident produced the turquoise water that draws the modern whistler seaplane glacier tour into the air each summer morning.
The colour has an equally specific cause. Glacial meltwater carries rock flour, sediment ground so fine by moving ice that it stays suspended and scatters short wavelengths of light. From the ground the lake reads simply as blue. From 1,500 metres it separates into bands — milky at the inflows where the Sphinx and Sentinel glaciers deliver their load, deepening toward the centre of the basin.
Around it stands the roll-call of Garibaldi Provincial Park. Black Tusk, the eroded core of an old stratovolcano, rises to 2,319 metres in a spire of fractured andesite that Squamish oral tradition names the landing place of the Thunderbird. Mount Garibaldi itself, at 2,678 metres, was named in 1860 by Captain George Richards for the Italian general. Wedge Mountain, 2,892 metres, is the highest summit in the Garibaldi Ranges and carries the Wedgemount Glacier, which has retreated more than a kilometre since surveys began in the 1970s. The park was protected in 1927 and now covers 1,946 square kilometres.
Flightseeing arrived in the region with the floatplane, an aircraft that needed no runway in a valley that had none. Green Lake and Alta Lake became the working aerodromes of the Sea to Sky corridor long before the road was paved. That lineage explains why Whistler glacier flightseeing still lifts from water, and why the fleet on offer here divides between fixed-wing seaplanes and helicopters — the first for the long horizontal sweep across the icefields, the second for a set-down on snow that no float can reach. Aerial routes over the Coast Mountains landmarks remain the only practical way to see the Garibaldi Névé whole in a single sitting.
